Taste Your Way Through Florida’s Nature Coast

When I set out last Friday evening to explore what the Nature Coast has to offer on a typical weekend night, I wasn't sure what to expect. Armed with a camera and a sense of curiosity, I decided to follow a route that would take me from Brooksville to Crystal River and beyond, documenting the real experiences our area provides for residents and visitors alike.

My evening began at Hernando Park in downtown Brooksville, where the monthly Friday Night Live concert series was just getting underway. Arriving early gave me a chance to appreciate what a gem this venue truly is, and to speak with both the Executive Director of Brooksville Main Street, Dawn Triconi and from and one of the performing musicians about what makes these events special.

"This is our Friday Night Live and it is coming back after a summer hiatus," Dawn explained as families began setting up their chairs around the bandshell. "We host this event September, October, November and then February, March, April, May and then we take a break."

The permanent bandshell, professionally equipped and well-maintained, sits beautifully against the backdrop of our historic courthouse and mature oak trees draped in Spanish moss. What struck me immediately was the professional quality of the sound and lighting setup. This level of technical excellence doesn't happen by accident - it's the result of local expertise working behind the scenes.

The technical production was handled by Wedgemark Entertainment Group, with Joe Marcus ensuring everything ran smoothly. From stage production to sound and lighting, the professional quality that makes Friday Night Live such a polished community event reflects the depth of talent available right here in the Nature Coast area. Combined with sponsorship from Lowman Law Firm, it's a perfect example of how local businesses come together to support community events.

What impressed me most was learning about the consistent schedule and community commitment. "We do this the second Friday of each month," Dawn shared, "and like I said, it's a free event. Come on out."

The Gaturz, who specialize in what the organizer described as "oldies, 50's, 60's, 70's kind of music," were setting up their equipment when I arrived. I had the chance to speak with Jerry, one of the band members, who shared some exciting news about their other community involvement.

(speaking of Bayport Inn) "Every now and then a lot of other bands can play on Friday nights here. It's a lot fun to come to the event," Jerry explained. But what really caught my attention was learning about their weekly commitment to the local music scene.

"Every Sunday we are the house band," Jerry told me, describing their open mic sessions at Bayport Inn. "We've been doing it for seven years now." The format is simple and welcoming: "We put out there and tell everybody to write your name on the list and what we would play drums guitar sing whatever and in the order that everybody signs up you bring them up on stage and they get to do their thing."

Best of all? "Totally free," Jerry confirmed. It's essentially an open mic where The Gaturz serve as the house band, supporting anyone who wants to get up and perform.

"Yes, absolutely. We do promote that it's family friendly so everyone can come over, bring families," Dawn Triconi emphasized when I asked about the audience. "It's like date night. We're doing family date night, have fun, you guys can dance. We have our own little dance floor ready, ready made and it's just a fabulous night to have some fun."

The 6:30 to 9:30 PM timeframe works perfectly for families, and the advice was simple: "Bring your chair or a blanket and have some fun." Food trucks and vendors add to the experience, making it easy to turn the evening into a complete outing.

Speaking of food options, the variety was impressive. Smokin' Oak, a veteran-owned wood-fired pizza operation, offered both traditional and vegan options right from their mobile kitchen.

Go-Go Burger, a Spring Hill-based food truck, served up their signature fresh-ground burgers with 14 different varieties to choose from.

For something completely different, The Lobster Tank, another veteran and family-owned business, brought authentic Maine lobster rolls to downtown Brooksville.

Before heading to my next destination, I took Dawn's suggestion to heart and explored downtown Brooksville. "People can explore downtown throughout the night," she had mentioned, and I discovered she was absolutely right.

Just one block from the concert venue, the historic downtown area features beautifully preserved architecture housing a variety of local businesses, from antique shops to dining establishments. The walkable streets and well-maintained sidewalks make it easy for concert-goers to extend their evening with a stroll through the area.

For anyone interested in attending future events, Brooksville Main Street hosts these concerts monthly and provides information about upcoming shows and downtown activities.

What became clear during my time in Brooksville is that Friday Night Live is just one piece of a larger musical community. Between the monthly concerts featuring rotating bands like The Gaturz, the weekly open mic sessions at Bayport Inn, and the professional technical support from businesses like Wedgemark Entertainment Group, there's a genuine ecosystem supporting live music in the area.

The combination of live music, historic charm, local business support, and professional production creates an evening that goes well beyond just a concert - it's a genuine community experience that showcases the best of what Brooksville has to offer.

Leaving the warm glow of downtown Brooksville behind, I took a short 30-minute drive west on Route 98 to see what the coastal communities had to offer. The transition from the historic, inland charm of Brooksville to the laid-back, waterfront atmosphere of the Crystal River area was a perfect illustration of the diversity our Nature Coast holds.

My first stop was a quick visit to the iconic manatee statue at the entrance of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Even in the evening, the park’s entrance was a beautiful sight and a reminder of the natural wonders that define our region. 

Just a stone's throw away, I found Kelly's Half Shell Pub, a lively spot with a classic coastal vibe. The sounds of happy patrons spilled out from the outdoor seating area, and it was clear this was a popular local hangout.

My biggest surprise of the night came when I arrived at Norton's Riverside Bar & Grill in Crystal River.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the water, the sound of a live band drew me in. The outdoor patio was buzzing with energy as people enjoyed dinner, drinks, and the fantastic music of Destination 80s, a band that perfectly captured the fun, upbeat vibe of the evening.
